Did you know that the exhaust system of your car is what silences the sound of the engine? Without the exhaust and muffler, your car would sound extremely loud, and you would not be able to even hear yourself talk over the sound of the engine.

Catalytic Converter And Oxygen Sensors Control Emissions

Modern cars have two oxygen sensors located in the front and rear of the exhaust downpipe that measures oxygen levels exiting the engine. The purpose of oxygen sensors is to minimize emissions and maximize fuel economy. Most combustion-engine cars these days also have a catalytic converter that prohibits a large majority of hydrocarbons from exiting out the tailpipe.

Resonator And Mufflers Control The Sound

On the rear part of the exhaust, the resonator and muffler help further silence the engine's sound. A resonator is a metal box with sound chambers inside directing the exhaust out of the muffler.
